SEO for web shops

Few days ago i have found great article on SEO for blogs Here is link to the full article by Darren Rowse: Search Engine Optimization for Blogs - SEO
I think the same idea could be easily applied to any Internet site interested in growing Internet traffic
Here are few tips from this article:

  1. Offsite techniques - inbound links
from higher ranked sites than your own
relevant to the topic you are writing about
using relevant keywords to your page

To generate inboud links you should:

  1. Post quality content
  2. Notify relevant sites about your content
  3. Use site directories
  4. Inter-link your site
  5. Buy links
  6. Swap links

Author also decribes on-site techniques such as:

  1. Keyword Rich Content
  2. Themed sites
  3. Site Design
  4. Interlink your Site
  5. Update regularity
  6. Choose your domain name wisely
  7. Register your Domain for a Lengthy Period
  8. One topic per post
  9. Write optimal length posts
  10. Avoid Duplicate content
  11. Ping - services like Pingomatic
  12. Submit your RSS to MyYahoo
  13. Quantities of Content
  14. Submit to Search Engines

This shortlist may works just as a to-do list if you are going to increase your site popularity. I strongly recommend you to read full version by Darren as it contains links to most needed resources.

I think these ideas are universal for any kind of sites. We recommended same for online shop owners willing to optimize traffic to their shopping portals. In this case just replace blog posts to goods description

+ We have following advices for shop owners based on our experience:

  1. Descriptive URLs: Most simple cart engines generate links for goods like www.mydomain.com/product.php?id=123&category=456. While its evidently better to have something like: www.mydomain .com/get_great_ipod_mp3_player.html. This shows SE as that we have separate page for each product.
  2. Connect your site to as much trading platforms as possible. Such as eBuy, Amazon etc. Does anyone have statistics what percent of all online sales are done in Enterprise shops and in rest small businesses? Anyway pushing your products to bigger market is always good
